How to identify cystic acne

Apart from being the most severe form of acne – cystic acne is also larger than the other types of acne. It is also deeper within your skin. It usually appears like boils on the skin. The following are some of the characteristics of cystic acne:

  • Large white bump
  • It is filled with pus
  • Redness
  • Painful to touch

It usually appears on the face, but they can also appear on the neck, chin, chest, arms, and back.

What causes cystic acne?

The exact cause of cystic acne is not yet known. But genetics, hormones, and diet may play a role. Oil glands that are responsible for keeping the skin moist are attached to the pores, where hair grows and dead skin cells are removed. Acne pops up when the pores get blocked with oil and dead skin. When it comes to cystic acne, Propionibacterium acne – bacteria responsible for causing acne is trapped deep in the pores, causing inflammation– swelling, redness, and pain. Cystic acne has been linked to testosterone, making men a little more susceptible.

Does diet play a part?

Several studies have tried to look at the connection between diet and acne. Some of the foods that have been linked to acne include skim milk and sugary foods. But according to experts, the diet has nothing to do with acne for most people. But it costs nothing to be on the safer side by eating a healthy diet and cutting back on sugary and processed foods.

Cystic acne treatment

Due to the severity of cystic acne, it requires the help of a dermatologist and some self-care measures. There are various acne treatment methods available that the dermatologist will use to treat your acne. Some of the treatments for cystic acne include.

1. Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is used to treat severe forms of acne, such as cystic acne. It is directly available in pharmacies. It has been used to treat acne for decades. It works by killing Propionibacterium acnes.  The most common side-effect of this medication is skin irritation.

2. Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is a prescription medication. It has proved to be the most effective medication for cystic acne. It is produced from a strong form of vitamin A. It is an oral tablet taken every day. Many people who take it experience improvements within four to five months.  Side-effects include bruising and skin inflammation.
